Even Bagel Buyers Can’t Escape the GTA IV … [Culture]

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

gta_iv_bagels.jpgEven Bagel Buyers Can’t Escape the GTA IV Hype. In yet one more example of Rockstar Games keeping “quiet” on Grand Theft Auto IV’s release, it seems that you can’t do anything as simple as ordering a bagle in New York City without being subjected to the game’s marketing. Reader Christy lets us know that the simple act of trying to pick up an “everything” is an attempt to sell one more copy of GTA IV. What’s next? Coffee? Oh, wait… [Flickr]

Screenshot of CSPortable PSP homebrew game - Image 1

Those of you who enjoyed playing the homebrew version of Counter-Strikeon your PlayStation Portables had better savor this last bit of glory from developer Stealth_Kill. The developer of the highly popular CSPortable homebrew game explained that he will no longer be working on this particular project any longer.

However, as a parting gift, Stealth_Kill has rolled out the Dust Demo build of CSPortable as well as the source code behind the game. Included in this version are the highly popular De_Dust and De_Dust2 maps as well as several new weapons and UI changes.

Anyway, here’s the list of all the new changes implemented since our previous coverage of CSPortable:

  • De_Dust
  • De_Dust2
  • Bomb explode
  • Weapon Damage fixed
  • New HUD Gfx by X3nophon
  • New Menu GFX by Dr Gallo
  • Steyr Aug Added
  • Dual Elite Added
  • Desert Eagle Added
  • Famas Added
  • FiveSeven Added
  • MAC-10 Added
  • IMI Galil Added
  • SG-1 (G3) Added

  • you can only carry a Pistol and a bigger weapon.
  • 2 Weapon Buy Menus (1 for CT and 1 for T)
  • Smaller Conback

The developer mentioned that while Dust Demo is still unfinished, it is already playable for all intents and purposes of this amazing homebrew adaptation. There were still several features left out like the death count, bomb diffusion and the respawning feature, but that will have to taken up by another developer who wishes to continue the CSPortable project.

In any case, you can download the homebrew game file and the source code through the links we’ve provided below. You can also discuss CSPortable Dust Demo with the author at the QJ.NET forums, accessible through the link below.

Top Castle Crashers Gamers to Win Bronze Statue [Culture]

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

The Behemoth, developers behind upcoming Xbox Live game Castle Crashers, plan to hand out bronze Castle Crashers trophies to the top leaderboard slots once the game comes out.

The devs say they hope to show off the statues, which are made of “genuine genuine bronze”, during this year’s upcoming Comic Con. They also showed off one of the statues gnarly arms. Apparently, casting bronze isn’t as easy as one would expect…. I’d expect it to be really hard.

echochrome? Thursday! [Playstation 3]

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

As the minimal headline suggests, Sony’s long awaited Escher-esque 3D puzzler echochrome will arrive digitally on North American shores tomorrow. The PlayStation 3 and PSP versions will each ring up at $9.99 and features 56 platform specific, ultimately controller flinging puzzles. I’m off to sell a pint to scrounge up the funds for both.

Would You Rather … The Other Guys Edition

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

In our continuing effort to bring you fresh and interesting content, X3F presents Would You Rather … a weekly feature that asks you the hard questions. The point? If you had to choose one or the other, which would you go for?

Now that we got that other game out of our system, we look to the future of sandbox adventures. Two titles stick out in our minds as potential GTA-killers but we’re torn on which one to grab. Pretending you’d only get one of the following titles, would you go for the sequel to a pretty solid GTA-clone from look, feel and execution in Saints Row 2 or the sequel of a more original GTA-clone in the form of 1940s based Mafia II?

View Poll

Feel free to share the reasons for your vote in the comments. We’ll share the results of the poll during the next edition of Would You Rather … which hits X3F every Wednesday.

Last weeks WUR results can be find after the jump … steal this info!

Western Digital’s VelociRaptor drive gets reviewed

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Filed under:

We already had some early benchmarks of Western Digital’s speedy new VelociRaptor hard drive the day it was announced, but the folks at Extreme Tech have now had a bit more time to spend with the drive, and they’ve churned out a full review of it for those that still haven’t made up their mind. As with others, they found the drive more than lived up to its promise of being the “world’s fastest SATA disk,” with it even beating out many solid state drives in terms of write performance. The biggest downsides, as you might expect, are its relatively high (but not unreasonable) price to gigabyte ratio, and its maximum 300GB capacity, although that’s nothing a second (or third) drive can’t solve. Of course, they don’t stop there, and you can find plenty of charts and comparisons to quench your curiosity by hitting up the link below.

Yamaha’s notepad / keyboard hybrid concept: a songwriter’s dream

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Filed under:

Yamaha’s got a thing for making dreams into reality, and we must say, we’re crossing our fingers and hoping to all that’s good and merciful in this world that the above pictured device goes commercial. Little is actually known about the keyboard / notepad hybrid aside from the fact that it was showcased at the Milano Salone trade fair in Italy, and for what it’s worth, Yamaha christened the device “key for journey.” Look, there’s even slots in the leather-bound lid so the keys have room to breathe when it’s all closed up. Ah well, a boy can dream, can’t he?
