PlayStation 3 sales overtake Xbox 360

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

And that’s not all - overtaking both the PS3 as well as the X360 is, of course, the Nintendo Wii.Sony shipped 280,800 PS3s during Feb, beating the 254,600 units of Xbox 360 shipped by Microsoft, the NPD Group said Monday. Overtaking both consoles, however, was the Wii. Nintendo shipped 432,000 of the lower-priced consoles favored by casual gamers.

In the portable console market, the Nintendo was the clear leader, shipping 587,600 units of the DS. Sony shipped less than half as many PlayStation Portables, at 243,100 units.

Street Fighter 3 Beta not on PS3 - Capcom explains

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

The new Street Fighter 3 Beta is out - great news for Xbox 360 owners. And only them. Capcom have explained that creating a beta for both the Xbox and the PS3 would be too costly for them, and thus opted for the Xbox as it’s cheaper to test and distribute than on the PS3.

Super Street Fighter HD

Says Christian Svennson, VP of strategic planning and business development: “In my ideal world of worlds, we would have done a beta on each,” but given Capcom’s “constrained” resources, the time, effort, and expense of doing it for both platforms “probably would have pushed the project back another few months on our side.” He also adds that “Even if it were possible for Sony to do, it would require 3 submissions (US, Europe, Asia/Japan) to reach the same global audience we can with MS in a single test and global submission. When you show me someone running a cross platform beta…I’ll be impressed, because that’s a hell of an investment.”

The good news at least is that PS3 owners won’t be playing a bug-ridden game… yeah that’s not any consolation :(

“When you show me someone running a cross platform beta…I’ll be impressed, because that’s a hell of an investment.” So there you have it, it’s basically cost-related. No worries though - “There is code parity across the two and any issues found in 360 will be fixed in PS3.” so at least PS3-ers won’t be playing a bug-ridden game!

Microsoft snuffs Blu-ray for the Xbox

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

Microsoft has denied reports that it is in talks with Sony to include Blu-ray DVD in its Xbox 360 console, Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for Xbox 360, confirmed on Wednesday.

This doused the recent speculation that Microsoft could support Blu-ray after Toshiba, backer of rival HD DVD format, gave up when key movie studios and retailers jumped ship and joined Blu-ray.

“Xbox is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience,” Greenberg told Reuters in an interview.

Microsoft has stopped making an HD-DVD add-on for the Xbox 360 and will continue to invest in its Xbox Live online service that already lets users rent hundreds of movies, including high-definition versions.

“We’re the only console offering digital distribution of entertainment content,” Greenberg said.

The software giant also expected that supply problems for the Xbox 360 meant the machine was outsold in the U.S. market by Sony’s PlayStation 3 console in February for the second month in a row.

“We definitely expect we will trail in February as a result of our supply constraints,” Greenberg said, adding: “By April, we will be in a very healthy inventory situation.”
